The Need for Design

Clarity Spoken Here designed the zig-align Web site from February to July 2000. At the beginning of the project, zig-align had a single-page site and a large volume of technical information about products and parallelism. Realizing that converting their information directly into Web pages would not make a user-friendly Web site, zig-align sought a specialist who could help them transform their visions into an effective site.

The Design Process

Clarity Spoken Here specializes in helping clients determine their objectives and define their target audience. The next stage is the design of an appropriate information architecture and its systematic application to organize and present the information on the Web. A cycle of review and refinement fine-tunes the original information architecture to the satisfaction of both the client and consultant. This review process may take several months, but pays off in reduced development costs overall and a presentation of content optimized to the target audience.

Clarity Spoken Here employs graphic artists and webmasters to create the actual Web pages. The detail design work also faces challenges from technical constraints imposed by present Web technology and bandwidth. However, overcoming these challenges and finding ways to elegantly present complex information can be some of the most rewarding work on a project such as the zig-align site.

An important part of the design process is deciding what to include and what to leave out. Both decisions are critical to the creation of a Web site that serves the needs of clients effectively and efficiently and avoids presenting too much information, which might be intimidating. It was a key design goal to make the zig-align site easy for first-time browsers to learn more about parallelism and the ways in which zig-align products could benefit them. Hopefully, this has been done in a manner that makes the large volume of information easy to navigate and understand.

In the process, Clarity Spoken Here improved the clientÕs computer knowledge and suggested ways to actively maintain the site. The zig-align site is presently self-maintained, with occasional technical assistance provided on an as-needed basis.
